This treatment stage will help patients address their emotional trauma and historical pain. Individual Therapy helps the patient address these issues. The treatment combines elements of Didactic Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy designed to process and dismantle denial and offer an opportunity to uncover all levels of denial as well as stimulate psychological, emotional and spiritual recovery.
As the patient learns to identify and address the causes of their addiction, the treatment can then move towards healing and learning the skills required for a successful and long lasting sobriety.
CHANGES provide support and ongoing treatment after the patient leaves the facility. The Individual counselling options will ensure the patient is adequately supported to help him/her with the difficult task of recovery and life.

Changes on the farm is a long-term inpatient recovery program situated on a magnificent, tranquil, agricultural property on the outskirts of Johannesburg, close to Lanseria airport.
CHANGES on the Farm has changed the way we are providing treatment. Focus is placed on holistic treatment with emphasis on life skills and Trauma healing. Clients learn how to take personal responsibility, take care of themselves and others. From cooking skills to gardening, farming and caring for animals, Wood workshops, ceramics, mosaics and creative art expressions. Combined with cognitive behavioral therapy, Didactic Behavioral therapy, Group therapy and Individual therapy and a strong emphasis on 12 Step Groups, Step Work and meetings.

When all these therapies are integrated, we see strong, honest individuals emerging who are more able to deal with life issues in a healthy, sober and responsible manner. As we peel away the layers of the addictive mechanisms, we treat people with a Bio-Psycho-Social methodology which supports abstinence from substances, recovery from addiction and the ability to take personal responsibility.
We aim to uncover, develop and enhance each individual person’s talents and skills to prepare them for a successful re-entry into society, to ultimately live a clean, sober and serene lifestyle whilst discovering their full potential.

The Client may come in willingly or be ordered through the court system.

Our aim in the halfway house is to provide a supportive structured environment in which residents in early recovery from addiction can learn to apply the principles of the twelve-step program and practice a healthy sober way a life. Having the support and structure of the halfway house allows recovering addicts to focus on recovery and prevents them from making unhealthy, risky and dangerous decisions. They learn life skills and become accountable for their behaviour and actions, taking responsibility for their actions.
We encourage our clients to heal, live healthy responsible productive lives and discover who they truly are. This process is best started in a safe and managed environment.
The client will be held accountable for their recovery are expected to give random urine tests at the request of the house Manager and/or Staff.
We expect the residents to live by the NA program and therefore three twelve step meetings are required per week whilst living in the house. Therapy is highly recommended, Outpatient, individual counselling, couples counselling, family counselling and various group therapies, are on offer by CHANGES Treatment Centre at an additional cost.

The Client may come in willingly or be ordered through the court system.

  • An ability to hold down employment or attend to their studies
  • A strong family or employment support structure
  • Whether or not the patient can ‘leave their lives’ to attend treatment
  • If these factors are correctly assessed, then Outpatient Treatment could be the solution and may suit their needs very well
  • Morning or evening options are available and the choice is based on their responsibilities, and the circumstances which pertain to their particular situation
  • Morning groups start at 9.30am and run till 1pm including a half-hour step work
  • Evening groups start at 4.30pm and run till 7pm

Ideally if a client has the required degree of functionality we will recommend and support outpatient treatment. The functionality required, the patient’s routine and support systems that are in place will determine the success of the outpatient program.
Clients will receive their schedules upon admission in their treatment file and given a timeslot for their individual counselling sessions. They also need to attend four 12 Step Meetings per week, one AA meeting will be attended at CHANGES on Mondays after group.

Outpatient treatment as a follow up to completing inpatient treatment

Upon completion of the Inpatient Treatment Program, Clients are encouraged to move into the Halfway House to consolidate their process to enhance long term recovery and sobriety. If they are not working or studying, we recommend participation in both morning and evenings groups until they feel more stable and able to start looking at future-prospects. We offer Outpatient Care for up to 12 months of the person’s sobriety. We encourage ongoing individual therapy, ongoing 12 step support group meetings, and an ongoing relationship with their 12 Step Sponsor. Attendance at aftercare for as long as the client feels it is necessary to attend. Most of our long term recovering clients attend aftercare for a minimum of 2 years. There is no extra charge for this service.

When it comes to addiction, the reality is that the whole family is affected by their loved one’s addiction. As the addiction progresses for the addict so do the effects on the family.
It is normal for family members to feel confused, angry and helpless. Living with an addict/alcoholic takes a toll on all family members – physically, emotionally and spiritually.
You can’t control your loved one’s addiction, but you can take responsibility for your own health and happiness.
You will learn three basic truths about the disease:

  • You didn’t cause the addiction
  • You can’t control the addiction
  • You can’t cure the addiction

Family Guidance and Counselling is just as important as the counselling that the addict receives. Recovery is stronger and more effective when family members are educated and involved in the treatment process.
By attending the weekly family support group, you will gain education and guidance from other family members, with the help of a trained facilitator.
The addict will be in recovery one day at a time for their entire lives and the family need to understand this to be able to support them.
At CHANGES we offer a powerful, constructive, non-judgmental family support group. There are no charges for this group. It is open to the public and all friends and family are welcome.

These groups run every Wednesday at 5.45pm – 7pm (excluding public holidays)
A Tough love group is also hosted at CHANGES every Monday at 7.30pm

Both support groups will teach and guide families in their journey of recovery from their loved one’s addiction
